| An overview of the available information on the commercially important squid species distributed in the Argentine Sea and adjacent zones is given. It includes the most representative characteristics to identify the species and general information on their biology, distribution and fisheries. A biological sampling designis presented, with particular emphasis on the identification of sexual maturity stages. The world market of the squid resources has considerably risen in the last decades and one of the most important fishery zones is placed in the Southwest Atlantic region (Area 41, FAO), where squid represent 25. of the total landings. | A bibliographical review of the taxonomy and biology of the two most important loliginid species, Loligo sanpaulensis and Loligo gahi, of the Argentine Sea is presented. The external morphology and the anatomy of the reproductor system for both sexes are described, as well as the larval period, nutrition, age and growth for both species. The geographical distribution and the relative abundance in relation to the size structure and maturity stage are analized. Abundance estimations of L.gahi, in the Southpatagonian shelf, were obtained from two research cruises data. Catch data for the two species is also presented. |

| An update of the knowledge on the three most important ommastrephid species that inhabit the SW Atlantic: Illex argentinus, Martialia hyadesi and Ommastrephes bartramii, is presented. Up to the moment, only I.argentinus was intensively studied. Its distribution, population structure, reproduction, growth and paralarval development are analyzed, togheter with other aspects of its biology, such as feeding, predators and parasites. Also its utilization for human consmption is considered. Regarding M.hyadesi and O.bartrami, information on their distribution and biology is presented. |

| The morphology and histology of the digestive tract of the Argentine short-finned squid Illex argentinus are described. The structures involved are the buccal mass, oesophagus, vestibulum, stomach, caecum, intestine, digestive gland and digestive duct appendages. A differential development of the tissular components in relation to the function of each organ is observed. The musculature of the buccal mass, oesophagus and stomach, organs involved in the mechanical degradation of food is strongly developed. This development is weaker in the caecum where enzymatic digestion and absorption take place and in the intestine. | A description of Illex argentinus beaks, made on the basis of qualitative and quantitative characteristics, is presented. Likewise the equations that represent the relationships between the rostral length of each beak with the mantle length and total weight of squids are proposed, as a tool for reconstructing them. A total of 291 squids, comprising the complete size range, from juveniles to adults,were analyzed for the latter purpose. | Beaks of Loliginid squids have very similar morphological features making identification of the species to be quite difficult. A new metodology to identify species from the relative growth of some parts of the beak is presented. Samples of Loligo gahi and Loligo sanpaulensiswere obtained from ten reserch cruises of RVS "Dr. Holmberg" and "Captain Oca Balda" and eight commercial landings at Mar del Plata Port during the period 1992-1993. | The distribution, abundance and population structure of Illex argentinus in relation to the oceanographic conditions during summer 1997, were analyzed as a result of the research cruise carried out by R/V Shinko Maru No.3 on the Argentine shelf (39-50°30'S). Besides, abundance and biological features of Ommastrephes bartrami are analyzed. The main activities carried out during the cruise included jigging operations, tagging (only for I. argentinus) and biological sampling. | Morphological characters of two loliginid squids, Loligo gahi and Loligo sanpaulensis, in the SW Atlantic region off Argentina were studied to obtain a diagnostic criterion for their identification. Emphasis was placed on the taxonomic characters suitable to identify individuals in the whole size range. Considering the uncertainty associated to the correct identification of juveniles, their taxonomic status was confirmed using electrophoretic studies. Discrimination between species based on morphological characters proved to be more effective than meristic counts.
