An overview of the available information on the commercially important squid species distributed in the Argentine Sea and adjacent zones is given. It includes the most representative characteristics to identify the species and general information on their biology, distribution and fisheries. A biological sampling designis presented, with particular emphasis on the identification of sexual maturity stages. The world market of the squid resources has considerably risen in the last decades and one of the most important fishery zones is placed in the Southwest Atlantic region (Area 41, FAO), where squid represent 25. of the total landings. Calamares loligínidos (Cephalopoda, Loliginidae). OceanDocs

A bibliographical review of the taxonomy and biology of the two most important loliginid species, Loligo sanpaulensis and Loligo gahi, of the Argentine Sea is presented. The external morphology and the anatomy of the reproductor system for both sexes are described, as well as the larval period, nutrition, age and growth for both species. The geographical distribution and the relative abundance in relation to the size structure and maturity stage are analized. Abundance estimations of L.gahi, in the Southpatagonian shelf, were obtained from two research cruises data. Catch data for the two species is also presented.

Calamares omastréfidos (Cephalopoda, Ommastrephidae). OceanDocs

An update of the knowledge on the three most important ommastrephid species that inhabit the SW Atlantic: Illex argentinus, Martialia hyadesi and Ommastrephes bartramii, is presented. Up to the moment, only I.argentinus was intensively studied. Its distribution, population structure, reproduction, growth and paralarval development are analyzed, togheter with other aspects of its biology, such as feeding, predators and parasites. Also its utilization for human consmption is considered. Regarding M.hyadesi and O.bartrami, information on their distribution and biology is presented.

Descripción morfológica e histológica del aparato digestivo del calamar Illex argentinus (Cephalopoda: Ommastrephidae) OceanDocs

The morphology and histology of the digestive tract of the Argentine short-finned squid Illex argentinus are described. The structures involved are the buccal mass, oesophagus, vestibulum, stomach, caecum, intestine, digestive gland and digestive duct appendages. A differential development of the tissular components in relation to the function of each organ is observed. The musculature of the buccal mass, oesophagus and stomach, organs involved in the mechanical degradation of food is strongly developed. This development is weaker in the caecum where enzymatic digestion and absorption take place and in the intestine. Description of Illex argentinus beaks and rostral length relationships with size and weight of squids. OceanDocs

A description of Illex argentinus beaks, made on the basis of qualitative and quantitative characteristics, is presented. Likewise the equations that represent the relationships between the rostral length of each beak with the mantle length and total weight of squids are proposed, as a tool for reconstructing them. A total of 291 squids, comprising the complete size range, from juveniles to adults,were analyzed for the latter purpose. The morphometric description was made on a total of 90 individuals from the Argentine Sea, taking the following measurements on each beak: rostral length, hood length,crest length, wing length and wing width. Diet of red squid (Ommastrephes bartramii)in the Southwest Atlantic OceanDocs

The diet of red squid (Ommastrephes bartramii)during autumn 2001 and2002 in the SW Atlantic region off Argentina and Uruguay (33° S-42° S;46° W-55° W)was composed mainly of fish (55-68. ), followed by squid (32-37. ) and zooplankton (8. only in 2001). Around 60. of the fish eaten was identified as myctophids and corresponded to five genera and seven species, with higher frequency of Hygophum hygomii (24-34. ). The identification of squids consumed reached 20. in 2001 and 80. in 2002 and the only species identified was O. bartramii, which implies percentages of cannibalism of 5.6. and 25.8. each year. Beaks of Loliginid squids have very similar morphological features making identification of the species to be quite difficult. A new metodology to identify species from the relative growth of some parts of the beak is presented. Samples of Loligo gahi and Loligo sanpaulensiswere obtained from ten reserch cruises of RVS "Dr. Holmberg" and "Captain Oca Balda" and eight commercial landings at Mar del Plata Port during the period 1992-1993. The distribution, abundance and population structure of Illex argentinus in relation to the oceanographic conditions during summer 1997, were analyzed as a result of the research cruise carried out by R/V Shinko Maru No.3 on the Argentine shelf (39-50°30'S). Besides, abundance and biological features of Ommastrephes bartrami are analyzed. The main activities carried out during the cruise included jigging operations, tagging (only for I. argentinus) and biological sampling. In addition, meteorological and oceanographic data were collected. A total of 30,2000 individuals were tagged and released. The recapture rate was 0.156. Morphological identification of two southwest Atlantic loliginid squids: Loligo gahi and Loligo sanpaulensis OceanDocs

Morphological characters of two loliginid squids, Loligo gahi and Loligo sanpaulensis, in the SW Atlantic region off Argentina were studied to obtain a diagnostic criterion for their identification. Emphasis was placed on the taxonomic characters suitable to identify individuals in the whole size range. Considering the uncertainty associated to the correct identification of juveniles, their taxonomic status was confirmed using electrophoretic studies. Discrimination between species based on morphological characters proved to be more effective than meristic counts. Ommastrephes bartramii: a potential target for the squid fishery in the Southwest Atlantic OceanDocs

Six exploratory cruises on board of the Japanese RV "Shinko Maru N°3" were carried out between 1997 and 2002 to obtain data on red squid (Ommastrephes bartramii)in the oceanic area of the SW Atlantic off Argentina and Uruguay (33° S-42° S/43° W-55° W). Between 10 and 32 jigging stations were performed each year during the night at depths of 80-200 m. Positive catches were registered in the whole area investigated with yields ranging between 0.01 and 2.03 kg/ (hour*line)and 0.001-2.26 individuals/(hour*line). Total catches oscilated between 1,426 kg in 2002 and 2,825 kg in 2000 and sea surface temperature at the fishing stations between 7.5° C and 24.5° C. Reproductive biology of red squid (Ommastrephes bartramii) in the Southwest Atlantic OceanDocs

Red squid (Ommastrephes bartramii) samples were collected during six exploratory cruises carried out in the Southwest Atlantic region off Argentina and Uruguay (33° S-42° S; 43° W-55° W) during summer-autumn of the period 1997-2002 on board the japanese jigger “Shinko Maru N° 3” under a joint research programme approved by Japan and Argentina. Size ranges of the squids analyzed were 10-40 cm mantle length (ML) for males and 12-49 cm ML for females. Two groups of squids were identified: smaller and larger than 20 cm ML. The group under 20 cm ML was characterized by the presence of immature squids and a sex ratio of around 1:1 in the whole study area. Two new records of giant squid (Architeuthis sp.)from the Patagonian region OceanDocs

Two females of giant squid Architeuthis sp. were caught by trawlers onthe South Patagonian shelf Argentine Sea in 1998 and 1999. The first specimen was captured during a bottom trawl at 50°39'S-66°35'W in April 1998 and the second during a midwater trawl at 53°54'S-63°45'W in February 1999. The animals were severely damaged, specially on the tentacles, arms and fins. Both specimens, of 177 and 144 cm mantle length, were maturing. The internal and external anatomy and morphometric characters were examined and compared to previous records of this genus in the Southern Oceans.
